This area is situated in the south of Granada. It is bordered to the east with the west almeriense area; to the West with la Axarquia - Costa del Sol (Malaga); to the north with Alhama, Valle de Lecrin and the Alpujarra Granadina; to the south with the Mediterraeam Sea. It is situated in a thin border between the south of Sierra Nevada and the Mediterream Sea with 73 km of sea. Providing a soft weather and allow the cultive of tropical products. The area includes 19 villages and enjoys a total population of 127.000 inhabitants. It is 69 km form Malaga from la Herradura, 76 km to Almeria from Albuñol and 67 km to Granada from Motril.

The gastronomy of the region is very diverse and rich, because we can taste products from both sierra and it´s rich Vega and the sea, and all this is based on ancient recipes of all settlements that have been. Between the dishes that we can taste we can point out the zalamandroña soup, the zarzuela of seafood, fennel stew, choto with seasoning or the crumbs and regarding to seafood, we have the dried octopus, shrimps, prawns white, the scampi, doradas, sargos, snappers, etc.. The pastries, of clearly Moorish influences, we highlight the bizcochadas, the flakes, the cake of chicharrones, the typical Royal Cake, fig bread, donuts, etc. Also emphasize it´s known wines which are produced in Albuñol and Jete and the sugar cane rum that is elaborated in Motril and enjoy their rich subtropical fruits such as mango, mediar, guava, avocado and chirimoya.

The settlements have been very numerous and various thanks to its strategic position in the Mediterranean coast, its climate and fertile land tucked by Sierra Nevada. Its origins date back to the bronze age as testified by the remains found in the Cave of bats in Albuñol. But, it will be the phoenicians (we have remains in Almuñecar) and Romans (factories, necropolis and other buildings in Motril and Salobreña or Almuñecar) with a large economic development thanks to its production of fruit, vegetables, salted and trade, in particular in Sexi, the current Almuñecar. In the muslim period other nuclei in the interior as Lentejã, Otivar or Jete will arise and throughout the region castles, towers and lookouts for the defense of the coasts against Christians where built. In Christian times, they took advantage of these constructions to defend the coast from the attacks by Berber pirates and Turks. In the reign of Philip III, the expulsion of the moors occurs, depopulation and repopulation with castellanos. In this period we can highlight the Greater Church of the Incarnation in Motril or Church Our Lady Del Carmen in Itrábo and in current era, its economy has been based on the proliferation of tropical crops and the rise of tourism. It should be noted that there are several museums and recreational aquatic spaces exotic species. In relationship to the natural spaces, we emphasize the National Parc of Sierra Nevada and the cliffs of Cerro Gordo (municipality of Almuñecar), the N. P.
