County located in the central part of the province of Granada. Bordered by the regions of Alhama in the west, the Vega of Granada in the north, the Alpujarra of Granada in the east, and the Costa Tropical in the south. Extends from the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada until the plateau of Albuñuelas and the Sierra of the Guájaras, on one hand, and from the Suspiro del Moro until the confluence of the rivers Ízbor and Guadalfeo, on the other. The privileged situation of the Lecrin Valley, between the depression of the Genil, Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean coast, makes it obligatory step between Granada, the Coast and the Alpujarra. The region is formed by 8 municipalities: Nigüelas, Albuñuelas, Durcal, Lecrin, El Padul, El Pinar, The Valley and Villamena. It has a population of approximately 22,500 inhabitants.
The gastronomy of the region is based on the products of the fertile plains and of the various products of game, in addition to the origin of their dishes from the Arab era. In between all the typical dishes from the region we have the migas, choto al ajillo, collejas omelet, casserole, stews, beans with cod and the fennel stew. Other dishes are more localised: marranero stew, casserole of crabs, pipirrana, rabbit and goat cheese in Albuñuelas or pestiños in Béznar and Velez. Its rich and varied pastries eminently of Andalusian origin include the hornazas, the cakes with greaves, cinnamon rolls. Without forgetting of course that, it´s important and popular "Mostos" are exported to other areas.
Due to its geographical situation, between Granada, the Alpujarras and the Mediterranean coast, it has been occupied since the Paleolithic period. Of all the occupations the Arabic stand out , where an authentic agricultural revolution was developed which was the creation of a system of canals for irrigation and the distribution of land in plots for its best use, which is still currently running. There have been two times of depopulation, the first with the expulsion of the Moorish and another in the years 1960-70. It suffered the earthquake of 1884 that affected Albuñuelas and Murchas. Another milestone which marked the county was the attempt of industrial development with the attempt to build the longest cable car in Europe which would have joined Durcal with the port of Motril. The county has a varied and rich artistic heritage, we point out the remains from the Paleolithic and Neolithic caves in Padul or in the Rambla de Durcal, Iberian remains in Murchas and Velez, Roman remains in Padul, Restábal or Velez. Some of the Arab era fortresses such as the Castle of Murchas or Mondújar. From the Christian era there are numerous churches, hermitages, sources, etc as the Churches of Albuñuelas or Durcal, Casa-Fuerte Padul, etc. The county is nestled in the National Park of Sierra Nevada, constituting one of the areas of most geographical personality of transition between the Vega of Granada and the Temple. It is characterized by being a orchard between high peaks, surrounded by the massif of the Sierra Nevada and the Sierra de Albuñuelas. The Temple forms a kind of Plateau between the valley of the Genil River and the sea formed by forest and olive groves, cereal and almond. Due to all this, there are plenty of paths to different landscapes such as the ascent to the "Pico del Caballo", the glaciers of the Sierra Nevada, the "Riscos de Durcal", the lagoon and the depression of Padul, the dam of Béznar or "falla of Nigüelas". In addition to sports activities such as hiking, mountaineering, hang gliding, caving, etc.
