The region is located southwest of the province of Malaga. The municipalities that form the county are: Benahavis, Benalmadena, Casares, Estepona, Fuengirola, Manilva, Marbella, Torremolinos and Mijas. Although, according to the order of the BOJA of 14-03-2003, it would also include Istan and Ojen, municipalities that are integrated into the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol. It is situated between the Mediterranean sea and the foothills of the Penibetic Mountain Range, where the Sierra de Mijas, Blanca, Alpujata and Crestellina Bermeja stand out and make a link with the Sierra de Ronda and the Montes de Malaga. In the narrow strip of land between the mountains and the sea there is a great diversity of landscapes: beaches (93 km), cliffs, river mouths, coves and dunes. The rivers are short and seasonal. The most western part is located less than an hour from Morocco, 39 km from Gibraltar and the eastern part to 10 km from Malaga Airport. Its population is approximately 500,000 inhabitants.

The gastronomy of the coast is based on the fish and seafood from the Mediterranean, fruits and vegetables. These are the key ingredients of the traditional kitchen of the Costa del Sol, cooked with olive oil form the famous Mediterranean diet. amoung all the dishes we emphasize the gazpacho, the fried fish, "espetos de sardinas", the "boquerones" and a long etcetera of dishes related with the sea and highly demanded in the "chiringuitos" along the coast, in it´s restaurants and bars, although we must not forget very typical tapas bars. In addition to the typical dishes, we can also taste many dishes from a wide range of international cuisine.

In addition to the consolidated and recognized sun and beach tourism, these municipalities have been able to preserve important areas for rural tourism. Emphasizes the municipalities of Manilva, Casares, Estepona's, Marbella, Mijas and Benalmadena, in the most western part we can admire the natural beauty of the Real Sierra Bermeja and Paraje Natural Sierra Crestellina. In these landscapes it is possible to enjoy, in addition to exceptional natural surroundings, incredible views of the coast and the African continent. Along the entire coast we can perform a wide range of hiking trails and enjoy a multitude of sporting activities such as climbing, mountaineering, abseiling, horse riding, golf, etc.. As for off road paths, there are 18 routes with a total distance of more than 120 kilometres, along the entire coast from Manilva to Torremolinos.
